Mission Alignment
This platform directly serves UNDP's mission of cultural preservation, healing, and historical awareness by:
- Empowering communities to document and share their stories
- Creating a permanent, accessible archive of Lebanese memory
- Building connections between generations through shared history
- Fostering reconciliation through understanding diverse experiences
- Preserving cultural heritage for future generations
Vision & Mission Impact
The Problem We're Solving
Lebanon's Collective Memory Crisis:
- Stories of the civil war (1975-1990) are disappearing with each generation
- Oral histories are fragmented across families and communities
- No centralized, accessible platform for collective memory
- Younger generations lack connection to their history
- Reconciliation is hindered by incomplete narratives
Our Solution
A Living Digital Monument:
DealWithPast creates a crowdsourced memory map where Lebanese people become historians of their own experience. Every story becomes a geo-tagged piece of the national narrative, accessible to anyone seeking to understand Lebanon's journey.
Impact on Peace & Reconciliation
1. Shared Understanding
By reading stories from different communities, neighborhoods, and perspectives, users develop empathy and understanding across divides.
2. Collective Healing
The act of storytelling itself is therapeutic. Users process trauma by documenting their experiences and find solidarity with others who share similar memories.
3. Intergenerational Connection
Grandparents, parents, and children contribute to a shared family legacy, preserving stories that might otherwise be lost.
4. National Identity
The platform creates a multi-faceted portrait of Lebanon—not just war, but daily life, resilience, joy, and reconstruction.
5. Historical Record
Future generations will have access to authentic, first-person accounts of Lebanon's history, preserving truth for posterity.

- Communities see their experiences represented and preserved
- Families create lasting legacies for future generations
2. Mission System - Collaborative Memory Collection
Purpose:
Gamify storytelling by creating community goals that motivate users to contribute specific types of stories. Missions always start from an approved story, ensuring quality and relevance.
🆕 Story-First Mission Flow (Current Implementation):
Missions are now created FROM approved stories, not independently:
User creates a story → Submits for review
Story gets approved → User receives approval notification
"Create Mission" button appears → User taps to turn story into mission seed
Mission creation modal opens → Pre-filled with story location and context
User chooses mission type:
- Social Mission → Collaborative quest (goal: 5/15/30 stories)
- Personal Mission → Solo tribute (goal: 1 story)
Mission gets submitted → Requires admin approval
Mission goes live → Appears on map for community to join
This ensures:
- ✅ Every mission has a quality "seed story" to inspire others
- ✅ Missions are grounded in real locations and experiences
- ✅ Story approval happens BEFORE mission creation (quality control)
- ✅ Users see tangible starting point, not just abstract goal
Social Missions (Community Quests)
Collective goals requiring multiple contributors to preserve specific memories.
Examples:
- "Collect 30 stories from Hamra neighborhood during the 1980s"
- "Document 15 stories about daily life during wartime"
- "Gather 20 stories from Beirut Central about reconstruction"
Goal Levels:
- Easy: 5 stories → 50 points to creator
- Medium: 15 stories → 150 points to creator
- Hard: 30 stories → 300 points to creator
Completion Bonus:
- When mission goal is reached (e.g., 15/15 stories)
- ALL contributors receive +25 bonus points
- Celebration notification sent to all participants
- Confetti dialog shows all contributor names
- Mission status changes to "Completed"
How Contributors Join:
- User discovers mission on map or browse page
- User creates a story at or near the mission location
- When story is approved → Automatically linked to mission
- Mission progress updates (e.g., "8 / 15 stories")
Contributors tracked in database (wp_mission_contributors)
Personal Missions (Tributes)
Individual dedications to honor specific people, places, or events. These are solo missions with goal_count = 1.
Examples:
- "In memory of my grandfather, a baker in Tripoli"
- "Honoring the teachers who kept schools open during the war"
- "Remembering the neighbors who shared food during shortages"
How It Works:
- User creates personal tribute from their approved story
- Mission is marked "Completed" immediately (goal = 1)
Community can read the tribute and react with emojis (🙏❤️😊😢)
- Tribute remains on map as permanent memorial
- Others can contribute additional stories at same location (not linked to mission)
Key Difference:
- Social missions = collaborative, open for contributions, tracks progress
- Personal missions = solo dedication, completed immediately, emotional support through reactions
Mission Features:
- 📍 Geographic targeting (missions tied to specific locations)
- 🎯 Progress tracking (completion count / goal count)
- 🏆 Auto-rewards (points calculated based on difficulty × goal)
- 👥 Contributor recognition (names displayed when mission completes)
- 💬 Emoji reactions (community support for tributes)
- 📤 Social sharing (share missions on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter)
- ✅ Approval workflow (missions reviewed before publication)
User Impact:
- Motivation: Gamification drives more storytelling
- Community: Collaborative goals build connections
- Focus: Missions guide users to document underrepresented stories
- Recognition: Contributors see their collective impact
- Emotional Support: Tributes provide space for grief and remembrance

- 📅 Decade tags (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
- 🎭 Theme tags (war, daily life, reconstruction, family, etc.)
- 📂 Mission category (social vs personal)

Progression System (Simplified)
🎯 Levels Are Based on Story Count (Not Points)
The simplified system uses story count as the primary progression metric:
Level Progression:
- Follower (متابع): 0-4 stories
- Contributor (مساهم): 5-14 stories
- Ambassador (سفير): 15-29 stories
- Founding Partner (شريك مؤسس): 30+ stories
Why Story Count?
- ✅ Simple and transparent
- ✅ Encourages storytelling (the core mission)
- ✅ Easy to understand for users
- ✅ No complex calculations needed
- ✅ Direct connection to platform purpose
Points System (Secondary Metric)
Points exist as a vanity metric separate from levels:
Mission Creator Rewards:
- Easy mission (5 stories): 50 points
- Medium mission (15 stories): 150 points
- Hard mission (30 stories): 300 points
- Formula:
goal_count × 10 points
Mission Completion Bonus:
- When mission reaches goal → ALL contributors receive +25 bonus points
- Encourages collaboration and mission participation
Story Points:
- ❌ Stories do NOT award points
- ✅ Stories count toward level progression (what matters!)
Important Clarifications:
- 📊 Points = Displayed in profile, mission creator rewards
- 🏆 Levels = Based on story count only
- 💡 Separate metrics = Points ≠ Levels
User Impact:
- Clarity: Level progression is simple (just count stories!)
- Motivation: Mission creators get bonus point rewards
- Collaboration: Completion bonus encourages helping others
- Transparency: No hidden formulas or complex calculations

1. Breaking Echo Chambers
The Problem:
Lebanese communities often live in information silos, hearing only stories from their own sect, neighborhood, or political affiliation.
Our Solution:
The map displays stories from all neighborhoods, all communities, all perspectives. A user from Ashrafieh reads stories from Dahiye. A user from Tripoli discovers memories from Beirut.
Example User Journey:
- Young user from Christian neighborhood browses map
- Discovers story from Muslim family in same time period
- Realizes: "We experienced the same hardships"
- Develops empathy and understanding
Impact:
Cross-community exposure fosters shared humanity over division.
2. Humanizing "The Other"
The Problem:
Sectarian conflict dehumanizes opponents. Groups become monoliths rather than individuals with unique experiences.
Our Solution:
Every story has an author with a name, face, and personal history. Users don't see "a Shiite story" or "a Christian story"—they see "Maya's story" or "Ahmed's story."
Example User Journey:
- User reads story from "opposing" community
- Sees author's profile: parent, baker, football fan
- Realizes: "They're just like me—trying to survive"
- Prejudice dissolves through personal connection
Impact:
Personalization combats stereotypes and builds common ground.
3. Collective Trauma Processing
The Problem:
Lebanon has never had a formal truth and reconciliation process. Trauma remains unprocessed, passed between generations.
Our Solution:
The platform provides a safe space for storytelling, with moderator oversight ensuring respectful discourse.
Example User Journey:
- User writes story about losing family member in war
- Story approved and published
- Other users react with 🙏 (pray) emoji
- User feels: "I'm not alone in my grief"
- Therapeutic release through shared experience
Impact:
Collective grieving facilitates healing and reduces intergenerational trauma transmission.
4. Preserving Nuance
The Problem:
War narratives are often simplified: "good guys vs bad guys." Reality is far more complex.
Our Solution:
User-generated stories capture complexity: acts of kindness across sectarian lines, moral ambiguity, daily life continuing despite conflict.
Example User Journey:
- User reads story: "The Muslim neighbor who hid our Christian family"
- User reads story: "The Christian doctor who treated all patients regardless of sect"
- User realizes: "Not everyone fit the narrative I was told"
- Nuance replaces binary thinking
Impact:
Complexity fosters critical thinking and resists propaganda.
5. Intergenerational Dialogue
The Problem:
Young Lebanese often don't understand their parents' generation's experiences. Silence around war creates disconnect.
Our Solution:
The platform encourages families to document history together. Grandparents dictate stories, grandchildren type and submit.
Example User Journey:
- Teenager interviews grandmother about daily life in 1980s
- Grandmother shares stories never told before
- Teenager uploads story with grandmother's photo
- Grandmother sees story published, feels pride
- Family bond strengthens through shared project
Impact:
Bridging generations creates continuity and preserves oral history.
6. National Identity Reconstruction
The Problem:
Lebanon lacks a unified national narrative post-war. Each community has different "official history."
Our Solution:
The platform creates a multi-faceted national story by aggregating thousands of individual experiences.
Example User Journey:
- Researcher studies all stories from 1982
- Sees patterns: food shortages, school closures, resilience
- Also sees diversity: different neighborhoods, different impacts
- Builds comprehensive understanding of national experience
Impact:
Collective memory becomes shared national heritage.
7. Recognizing Resilience, Not Just Suffering
The Problem:
War narratives often focus only on death and destruction, ignoring Lebanese resilience.
Our Solution:
Platform encourages stories about daily life, joy, reconstruction—not just trauma.
Example Stories:
- "How we celebrated weddings during ceasefires"
- "The street market that never closed"
- "Children playing soccer in bombed-out buildings"
- "Musicians performing in candlelight"
Impact:
Celebrating resilience builds hope and pride in Lebanese identity.
8. Preventing Historical Revisionism
The Problem:
Political actors may attempt to rewrite history to serve current agendas.
Our Solution:
Thousands of first-person accounts create a permanent, decentralized record that cannot be easily manipulated.
Example Future Use:
- In 2050, historian researches Lebanon's reconstruction era
- Accesses DealWithPast archive
- Finds authentic, unfiltered accounts from people who lived it
- Writes accurate history based on primary sources
Impact:
Truth preservation serves justice and prevents future denial.

What Makes This Special
DealWithPast isn't just another social media app. It's a digital monument to Lebanese resilience, a healing tool for collective trauma, and a bridge between generations and communities.
Every technical decision—from location-based discovery to anonymous posting to mission collaboration—serves the core mission:
preserving memory, fostering understanding, and building peace.
Our Recommendation
Launch now.
The technology works. The features serve the mission. The platform is ready for real-world testing.
If the concept resonates (and we believe it will), invest in scaling:
- Modernize the tech stack ($20,000)
- Expand to other countries ($50,000-100,000)
- Establish UNDP as a leader in digital peacebuilding
But first:
launch, learn, and iterate.
Final Words
This project has been a labor of love for Reine Abbas and me. We've poured our skills, time, and passion into creating something meaningful—not just an app, but a tool for healing and a gift to future generations.
We're excited to see DealWithPast come to life, to watch Lebanese communities preserve their stories, and to contribute (however small) to Lebanon's journey toward peace and reconciliation.
